Software-specific export and inspection instructions come from the provider's current documentation. They support workflow claims, not universal manufacturer compatibility.
GIMP's official JPEG export documentation explicitly describes .jpg and .jpeg extensions, lack of transparency and layers, the cost of repeated lossy saves, progressive export, and non-comparable quality scales between applications. Adobe documentation supports Photoshop-specific export choices. Software docs are authoritative for those applications, not for every editor.
