Applications to Avoid
Avoid using PNG as the only production file when the job requires paths, stitches, three-dimensional geometry, an editable document, or machine instructions. PNG can show what the finished design should look like, but its pixels do not supply those other kinds of information.
Also reconsider PNG when the deliverable is a large photographic image that does not need transparency or exact lossless pixels. A different accepted image format may be more efficient. The best choice depends on the receiving workflow, not on a rule that photographs can never be PNGs.
When PNG can still participate
- Use it as a visual reference while a maker creates or validates a separate cut path, stitch file, or model.
- Use it as the approved raster artwork in a print workflow that explicitly accepts PNG and has suitable dimensions, transparency, and color handling.
- Use it as a product preview or mockup, clearly distinguished from the machine-ready asset.
Importing a PNG successfully is only the first check. Verify the final size, material, equipment, software, and proof requirements before production.
When PNG should not be the sole deliverable
