Start with the product
Production preparation begins with the exact product, variant, final size, printable area, production method, material, and maker requirements. A generic square canvas is not a substitute for a current product template.
- 1Confirm the product and variant.
- 2Obtain the current template and intended output dimensions.
- 3Identify bleed, safe areas, seams, curves, holes, and restricted zones.
- 4Place and adapt the artwork without accidental distortion.
- 5Calculate effective resolution at the final output size.
Control color and transparency
PNG uses grayscale, indexed-color, or RGB-based image types rather than a standard CMYK image type. The production workflow may convert color later using software, profiles, equipment, ink, and material-specific controls.
Decide whether companion files are required
A PNG may be the production artwork for compatible raster workflows. Print-and-cut, embroidery, laser cutting, CNC routing, and 3D production can require separate geometry or machine-specific information.
Build the handoff
- 1Export a purpose-built production PNG.
- 2Reopen and inspect the exported file.
- 3Use a clear filename and revision.
- 4Include product, size, placement, background, and method notes.
- 5Attach the editable source or companion file when the approved workflow requires it.
- 6Keep a locked copy of the approved package.
